We want you to learn how to think creatively about the topics in freshman chemistry which means that we want to minimize the memorization. However before anyone can think creatively about such concepts, the person must have a framework upon which to begin to build and to develop the person's own conceptualization of the topics. In order to help understand and learn these basic concepts it helps many people to be able to work problems over and over again until the concept is owned by the person. Here is a very useful site for you to go so that you can practise such concept development. This site was developed by Dr. George Wiger of the Chemistry Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
II. ConcepTests
Another way to help you understand concepts in Chemistry is to take some concept tests. The following site has a number of such tests that you can take (answers given) which will help you greatly as you seek to master the basics: ConcepTests. When you get to the site choose "General" in the left frame.
III. Another Concept Help Site
Now don't be insulted with this suggested site. It is an excellent high school site maintained by Ian Wigle of a high school in Toronto. He has done an excellent job and I highly recommend it for some review. When you get to the Wigle Site choose "SCH3A0 Grade 11 Chemistry Practice" and "OAC Chemistry Practice" for your edification.
IV. Chemistry Fun
This is a wonderful site called The Wonderful World of Chemistry" which is located at the Notre Dame High School for Girls. You could spend a lot of time going to all of the sites and most of it would be well spent. Please go here and at spend at least an hour or so looking up some of the topics and then sharing some of your insights on the Discussion Forum of WCB.
V. Tutoring Site
This is perhaps the best tutoring site that I have yet to see. It covers many of the concepts of chemistry and will be of great help to you in this course. As soon as you have a question, go to this site and see if you don't receive clarification. It is a product of Liina Ladon at Towson University and we thank her very much. So go to The Tutoring Site now.
VI. More Help
Here is an awesome site to help you with many concepts in chemistry including some visualization. I highly recommend that you go to this site often. It is maintained by Dr. Steve Lower, Department of Chemistry, Simon Fraser University. It contains many other sites which will help you as well as many helpers developed by Dr. Lower. So go to Dr. Lower's Site often.
VII. A Different Periodic Table
A VERY different periodic table!! Go here for fun with the periodic table. The site is HERE
